Jacob McNabb, a 33-year-old from Bakersfield, has been sentenced to 16 years and four months in prison for orchestrating a complex auto insurance fraud scheme. He was convicted of four felony charges, including insurance fraud, after investigators uncovered his role in dozens of staged auto collisions to secure fraudulent insurance payouts.
Fraudulent Scheme Unveiled by CDI Investigation
The California Department of Insurance (CDI) began investigating McNabb after the California Highway Patrol noticed an unusually high number of auto collisions linked to him. Over six years, McNabb reportedly orchestrated around 40 collisions. Investigators zeroed in on four specific incidents where he filed claims but concealed pre-existing damage to his vehicle.
McNabb would typically stage a collision, file a claim, and collect the insurance benefits. However, instead of repairing his vehicle, he kept the payout. He would then stage another collision involving the same pre-damaged area, file a new claim, and hide the earlier damage to secure higher payouts. This cycle was repeated multiple times, defrauding insurance companies and involving unsuspecting drivers.

He faced 11 additional felony counts for filing false documents, committing perjury, and engaging in identity theft.
